Web 2.0 Companies in India

There has been a lot of interest of late in the Web 2.0 space. Of course there are global biggies like MySpace , YouTube , LinkedIn, Ryze , Hi5 , Orkut , Filckr , Del.icio.us , Blogger, Digg etc etc.

A recent news of great interest in this space is Google’s interest in acquiring YouTube. Read Washington Post’s article

There have been loads of Indian Companies foraying into the Web 2.0 space. One of the recent more high profile joinees of the bandwagon is MIH with Ibibo (I build I bond)

I just wanted to compile a list of the Web2.0 companies, I am sure this will not still be a comprehensive list and I encourage readers to contribute to make it as exhaustive as possible. I could not resist adding Indian Search Engines to this lot though they are not Web 2.0 play. Well here it goes:

Social Bookmarking

Yahoo My Web 2.0
Indiagram

HumDigg

Social Networking

Rediff Connexions

Indiatimes Clubs
HumSubka
Sixer – Social networking for cricket fans
Wah India – Social networking for bollywood fans
Yaari – Social networking for youth (Hi5 of India)

Indian Search engines

ByIndia
Guruji – Yet to be launched
OnYoMo – Short form for On Your Move - Local search with maps.

Even globally, the Web 2.0 companies have not yet defined a very clear revenue model and path to profitability for themselves. So it will be very interesting to see who survives and thrives amongst the clutter of the Web 2.0 companies in India.

Anurag,
Nice listing of Web 2.0 Companies in India.
But I do have a question.
What makes the Search Engines listed Web2.0 ?
I feel Raftaar.com should be included instead of ByIndia.com

I have not heard of ByIndia before.
Web2 Corp (WBTO.OB) is a OTC Bulletin Board stock. Usually these kind of purchases are made to pump up the stock value.
Here is the value of the deal.

1.3 Purchase Price. The purchase price for the Intellectual Property (the "Purchaser Price") shall be (a) Eighty Thousand United States Dollars (US$80,000.00) and (b) Two Hundred Fifty Thousand (250,000) shares of common stock, par value $.001 per share, of the Parent (collectively, the "Shares").

Thanks Ravi & Rahul.

Ravi - I saw Raftaar.com.. very interesting.

Rahul - Web 2.0 companies are aggregating members/ eyeballs as of now. With Ad revenues growing at a fast clip, the assumption being made is that there will be enough revenue opportunities through advertising to focused / targted communities / groups.

I guess we will have to wait to see whether these assumptions get ratified.

Hi Anurag,

The photo sharing/printing list is quite long - must add kodakgallery.co.in(local flavor of the international version) and itasveer.com (startup by a bunch of IITD guys) to the list. I think there are several others.

You missed the blog aggregator enewss.com in your list of aggregators.

Your blog is great. I really liked the posts because you are talking about the latest technology in Internet particularly in India.I think you can add the www.printcamp.com link in the photo sharing/printing category because they are providing the similar service with good quality.I tried their service and received good quality photo prints. If you add that link then it may useful for most of the Indians living in the foreign countries.

Hi,
Its a great blog to know more about Web 2.0 companies. I have come across this site, Web 2.0 News India India's first web 2.0 enabled news portal with news coming in from over 150 sites. I think you should add this site to help the visitors to get variety of Indian news.

Thanks
Sriseshan

Anurag, its a really disgrace that the websites who being built in 5 minutes using Pligg are considered to be Indian Web 2.0 sites.

I know the post is a year old but even now I can't see any change in the sites. All the so called big web 2.0 indian sites either target US market or from Indians living in US(people who know the market).

We have yet to see any Mark Zuckerberg of India. Nice blog though, will you mind if I drop you a mail ?

Regards
